Hey, oh! Here’s the beautiful new 8’4 Pendoflex twin fin that Steve built for Max, painted with the colors of a Santa Ana sunset. Max and his family live near PV, where he loves to surf the cove and beachies up that way. He also enjoys yearly adventures to Costa Rica.

Steve experimented with some finless designs in the mid-1970s. Back then, he shaped a 5’10, 20-1/4 wide fish and added a flexible Fang tail to see if it would help a finless board hold into the wave. He found out that the Fang, as long as it was in the water, would help him make bottom turns to set up his rail for the speed runs. With all of the recent activity with alaias and the like, Steve remembered his boards from years ago in the 1970s, thus we now have the Pendoflex Fang. Fang and some other derivative terms for the tail protrusion are boundless, but our term Fang comes from a Grand Prix racer from the early 1960s. He was really fast on the race track, thus the quote “He was really fangin’ it!” Fang also has an edge board-inspired footwell on the deck where Steve has inlaid the little black foot pad.
Meet the Pendoflex Fang, inspired by one of Steve’s boards that we have from 1975 that he pulled down from the rafters. Fang is 5’11 and 19-3/4 wide. Fang will be shown by the United by Insanity folks Logan and Webster at the Art Expo in NYC on March 25-28. Check them out in Booth 139, they will have other boards by Steve and other excellent, creative shapers.

Well, Spring is here, a small NW and SW swell combo is running and the beautiful 5’10 Pendoflex arc tail quad that Steve built for Matt is ready! The paint is reminiscent of looking through clear water on a sunny day and seeing the kelp above.
There was some fog this morning and we enjoyed the humidity and soft, overcast lighting on the reefs and ocean.

Hey-O! here’s the new Pendoflex moon tail quad that Steve built for Ben. Steve hand-shaped this beauty using a WNC EPS blank and then he glassed it with epoxy. The rad camouflage paint job was sprayed by our pal Jeffrey Meyer. Ben is a tall, strapping lad of about 6’4 with size 14-1/2 feet, who likes to shred! The dimensions of his board are: length, 6’3, nose 14, wide point 21, tail 16 with a 9 inch moon tail and quad fin setup. Cowa-flexit!

Mike from San Clemente contacted Steve about Pendo-izing his beautiful bronze Campbell Brothers Octafish shaped by Malcom Campbell. Here are Mike and Steve with the Pendo-sized board. The deck was pounded out, so Steve repaired it and shaped in a full deck Pendoflex. This board looks like so much fun! Cowa-flexit!

During our morning walk at the Cliffs, a big centipede surprised us on the trail. Hmm, they are distant relatives of the lobster, maybe that explains it.

Further down the trail in the canyon, the aromatic Sage was calling and we were treated to beautiful purple Lupine, Slender Sunflowers and Indian Paintbrush.

San Diego has had about 2 to 2-1/2 inches of rain for each month this year so far and we’re grateful for the rain. The California native plants and wildflowers are thriving and a joy to see. Each day on our early morning walk, we’ve been treated to new flowers popping up. This week we were blessed by multiple rainbows over the ocean as the clouds moved quickly with the passing rain squalls and to the first Lupine flowers along the path. Love and Aloha!

Please join us Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the California Surf Museum for the opening of our new exhibit, WOW.
California Surf Museum’s 2010 special exhibit, explores many aspects of feminine wave-riding. From the Hawaiian surfing Queens of myth and legend, to the freshly crowned champions of the women’s pro tour, Women on Waves celebrates more than 300 years of women’s performances in surfing. The immense progress women have attained is a testimony to their talent and tenacity — which has been visible nowhere more than in the surf world.
At the same time Women on Waves chronicles the beach fashions women endured or created, the milestones they accomplished and the oft-overlooked influence the feminine mystique has had on surfing. The dance on waves, the natural connection to the sea, and the grace and beauty which is surfing, shares a decidedly feminine aspect.
The connection between women, the beach and fashion is always fascinating — the exhibits compilation of swimwear not only traces the styles and developments in womens attire, but documents the evolution of freedom and achievement attained over the last century as well. This collection of swim and surf apparel includes several world-class collections from around the nation — and tells an amazing story.
Although no exhibition can attain a complete history, the WOW show attempts to document the highlights of womens contributions throughout the sport and culture of wave-riding. For those who seek a comprehensive overview of the surfing experience, this provides one — but from a feminine perspective that will delight both men and women alike.
The California Surf Museum serves as an international repository and resource center for the lifestyle sport of surfing through capturing, preserving and chronicling its art, culture and heritage for the education and enjoyment of future generations.
Come celebrate the opening of our new exhibit with us, Fuel TV, Roxy team riders and some of the women that are being honored in the exhibit.
