Hey there! Here’s Erik with the sweet new Pendoflex fish that Steve built for him. We’re stoked to hear stories . . . Erik’s been traveling the coast, and also to Puerto Rico. Soon he’ll be heading back to work in the Channel Islands. We’re happy that Erik is blessed to live, work and surf in such beautiful places.

Aloha. On April 17th at 2 PM family and friends gathered at Beacons in Leucadia to celebrate the life of Kit Horn, 80, the greatly loved and inspirational pioneer surfer and waterman. We gathered at the north end of Beacons beach and paddled out to Kit’s reef. While we were paddling out, there was a head high southwest set with 13 waves (counted by Del Mar lifeguard Lieutenant Jim Lischer). A friend said, “Kit’s making us work for it! Go, Kit!” We gathered outside and joined hands in a circle of Love, Aloha and Respect. Kit’s son Brit led the beautiful service with guest of honor Peter Cole, who had come over from Oahu with his wife Sally to attend the service. Peter shared that Kit’s family was always most important to him. Kit would come and visit the North Shore and stay with Peter every year and they’d surf all day long, every day during his two week vacation. “Kit was a real charger,” Peter said. Several of us also shared stories about Kit and a lot of love was shared.

The morning before the paddle, Ocean Beach and Point Loma ambassador of Aloha Jim “Mouse” Robb, 77, shared a story with Steve and I about when Kit rode the biggest wave they’d ever seen ridden in Ocean Beach. “Kit, Gwen and the kids lived in OB in the early 1960s and Kit was an OB lifeguard with Bob Baxley and myself,” says Mouse. “One huge winter day, we were checking the surf and decided to paddle out at Off the Rocks near the cliff (where the OB pier is now, before the pier was built.) After fighting the waves and current and being washed down the beach a few times and walking back up, we finally made it outside, way out by the buoys, about 1/4-mile beyond the end of where the pier and big jetty are now. Both Bax and I wiped out and lost our boards and as we were swimming in, we saw Kit drop in on a huge wave and make it all the way across the beach until the wave closed out. Then he dropped to his belly, proned out and rode the whitewater into the beach. It was the biggest wave we’ve ever seen ridden in Ocean Beach.”

After the service, everyone rode fun waves for Kit and then gathered on the beach where Kirk and Brit raised a special flag with Kit’s name. The flag was designed and made by Kali, Brit and Sandy’s daughter. It was lovely to gather at the Horn family home and share loving stories about Kit. We love you and miss you Kit, you are an inspiration to us with your wave-charging spirit and your enduring stoke and Aloha.

Hey there! We enjoyed a fun trip up to Sacred Craft in Ventura on April 10-11. As always, it was wonderful to see friends and what everyone was up to. There were many beautiful boards and the adventure was varied throughout the weekend. Early on Saturday morning we laid out some of our favorite Pendoflex rides at the surfboard demo and they all were ridden multiple times, we’re so stoked to see the boards enjoyed! During the weekend, we helped out at the Groundswell Society booth and had fun talking story with friends who stopped by. We also leant support to the Antique Roadshow event and enjoyed helping appraise a few historic boards. Some of our favorite highlights of the show were seeing friends, surfboards, surfboards, surfboards—many built by friends, the Antique Roadshow, the Surfing Heritage Foundation’s Boards of Rincon exhibit curated by Barry Hahn, the Tribute to the Masters Shape-off in Honor of Renny Yater which was won by the amazing soul shaper Wayne Rich, our brilliant and very kind friend Carl Ekstrom winning the Best of Show for his 5’8″ asymmetrical fish, and Danny Hess’s and the Wegeners’ sweet boards. The show was fun, busy and sometimes hectic, so Cyrus Sutton’s Korduroy film festival lounge was a welcome respite from the hyper-energy. We wish we had photos of every gorgeous board and booth, and to those who are not shown, please know you are appreciated, too. Many thanks go to Scott Bass and his family for a great show weekend. Here’s a photo of last Friday afternoon before we drove up to Ventura for the Sacred Craft, showing the mixed swell and the pretty wildflowers of spring. We’ll have some photos from Sacred Craft-Ventura ready to post soon. A big congratulations go to our very talented friends Wayne Rich, who won the Tribute to the Masters Shape Off in honor of Rennie Yater, to Carl Ekstrom for winning the Best of Show for his beautiful and functional 5’8″ asymmetrical keel fin fish and to Danny Hess, who came in with a close second place for his gorgeous wood perimeter/EPS constructed quad. We so stoked for you all. It was an epic show and weekend. Smiles and Aloha!

Sometimes family projects take awhile to complete, because it’s all about the love. The 6’7 Geppie-inspired high aspect fish was shaped by Cher on August 21, 2009. Here are a few photos of the shaping and the completion of the board.

Several visual memories inspired the painting: The water flowing along through the reef where we live, when the water pulls out before the next wave, the eel grass on the reef, and the California gold of the cliffs and beach sand. Cher painted the board with acrylic paint directly on the foam, using big brushes and a large sponge. After painting, the next task was to laminate and hotcoat the new board, make the fins, glass the fins on and sand the board.

‘So excited and grateful to be able to build my own board again, start to finish. Thanks Steve, for your encouragement, and for sharing this wonderful experience with me. So stoked to ride it soon!

The sweet Pendoflex swallowtail trifin that Steve built for Mike M is now in the North East, ready to ride and we’re looking forward to hearing stories. Steve designed and hand-shaped Mike’s board from a special blank with twin cedar stringers and orange glue-ups. We painted his board with mellow coast to coast sunrise and sunset colors and then Steve glassed it with special care.

The black and white wave photo was borrowed (with respect) from the Shipworm & Gribble blog, reeling peeler (thanks, Mollusk NY folks).
