Pendoflex Surfboards

Hey, there! Here’s some terrific footage of Chapman Murphey riding the 6’5″ Pendoflex Step Off board that Steve made him last Summer. See the September, 1, 2009 post for more info about the board. The board would pivot on a dime or draw lines with complete ease. It also clung to the face in the barrel and with its weight I could lean as deep into a turn at full speed and not worry about slippin. The whole time the stiff flex was working with me like it was riding shot gun. No boingy bouncy on this stick , just FLEXN when it was called for. . .”

We have long appreciated The Surfer’s Path for its editorial content and beauty. The current issue of The Surfer’s Path (#78, June/July 2010) features a great article by Andrew Smith about the talented surfer-shaper Daniel Thomson, titled Of Chance and Choosing. Cher appreciated shooting portraits of Daniel with his boards and shaping to accompany the story. Other photographers are Billy Watts, Hilton Dawe and Andrew Shield.

Hey, there! Here’s the Pendoflex Hullabaloo, Lil’ King Salmon Wave Seeker for Scotty Sully, who is now living in the Northwest. His sweet little 6’3″ Hullabaloo has a widow-maker fin set up. Scotty’s friends Les and Elijah dropped by to pick up the board and it was nice to meet them.

Steve shaped a Pendoflex Hullabaloo with a widow-maker fin set up for our friend Scotty. Here’s the King Salmon Wave Seeker painted by Cher for Scotty’s board. The painting is done on the foam with fine brushes and sponges using acrylic paint with water. More on this sweet lil’ board soon, as Steve has laminated it and will be making the fins.

Here’s our friend Armand with the beautiful new Pendoflex thruster that Steve built for him to ride the waves up Goleta way. Armand is a marine biologist who is currently conducting research in the kelp forests, most specifically with the giant kelp macrocystis. We’re proud of the exciting work that he is doing.

Hello, there! it was another exciting and busy week. First off, congratulations to Chris Rule on the opening of his SurfIndian surf shop on May 22. The SurfIndian gallery also hosted an opening for the talented Japanese artist Koji Toyoda on the same night. The evening was fun and it was nice to see the lovely artwork, boards, clothing and catch up with friends. Surfboards by Skip Frye, Donald Takayama, Paul Strauch, Tyler Surfboards, Hydrodynamica, Pendoflex, Mast Surfboards, Michael Miller Surfboards and others are showcased at SurfIndian.

On Sunday morning, we cruised up to the 2010 AB3 Alternative Surfboard Show and demo morning at Oceanside harbor. Gale force winds were predicted and the weatherman was right! so most of us did not paddle out into the big, stormy conditions. We did enjoy visiting with friends and sharing about the beautiful surfboards, mats, hand planes and other gear. The sponsors and organizers are 101 Fins, Lokbox, Surfblanks, Real Surf Shop, SurfySurfy Surf Shop, Moonlight Glassing, Shawn Ambrose, JP. The SurfIndian opening was a sea of stoked folks

Victory at Sea in Ocean Beach, it's unusual to have NW windswell this big, this late in May, combined with a big South swell. The OB pier is over 1/2 mile long and the waves are breaking beyond the end of the pier!

On our way up north, we stopped by to see Ryan Burch and pick up the Rubber Rubber Ducky. Ryan said he had a blast riding it. Thanks, Ryan!

Hey there! We had a great time visiting NYC last weekend. The Mollusk Surf Shop crew was fun and we met a lot of kind folks there and at the NY Fish Frye, too. We were honored to meet the NY surfing community and thrilled to find out that they have pure stoked Aloha. We both enjoyed seeing the boards on hand at the Fish Frye, talking story with other surfers and about Pendoflex. The water was a chilly 49 degrees F or so, and I’d left my booties at home, so was only able to last about half an hour. Still, the water felt really good and it was great fun to catch a few waves on the Right Coast on MM’s orange Lis fish. (Thanks, Michael!) The surf shop had a fun Fish Taco Cook-off party the evening of May 15th and the tacos were delicious. We were impressed by the creativity that went into the cuisine and the variations in the flavor between the three taco chefs’ offerings. The Cook-off was a three way tie, everyone was a winner.

Michael, Heidi and little Vera treated us to vintage jazz by Billie Holiday and Bill Evans and more, transporting and beautiful to our ears and senses. The MM specialty, tasty Littleneck Clams delicately seasoned over pasta, was divine.

Much respect goes to these dedicated soul surfers who surf the cracking cold water waves all winter long in sub-40 degree water. Thank you from our hearts for your kind hospitality and friendship, we enjoyed our visit very much.
