Uncle Val Ching Jr., The Living Link to Surfing’s High Performance Roots

Our friend Nick Beck shared stories and photos, as he was on the treacherous channel crossing with Uncle Val, Rabbit and others.

Today Val is a cultural specialist who encourages others to come back to their roots of Hawaiian culture, farming, arts and fishing practices.

In September, Dorado rode a Pendoflex keel fish at G-land and emailed with a report: “I bought Kevin’s old 6’1.5 twin keel and today rode it at small but fun and perfect 4-8 ft faces at G-land and solid OH impossibles a few days before and have never gone faster or made more sections in my life . . . I want to thank you, as I was routinely connecting waves from the ledge all the way through to speedies at G-land this arvo . . .” Thanks so much, we’re so stoked on Dorado’s report. Steve built this beautiful double-stringer Pendoflex thumb tail for him.

Hey there! Here are photos of the beautiful Pendoflex Rubber Ducky that Steve built for Cho-San with hand-crafted care. It is 5’0″ long and 23-1/4″ wide. Steve made special hand-made birch twin keels for the board.

Steve made the first little Pendoflex Rubber Ducky in 2007 as a family board that we could ride every way, paipo, kneeboard and standing up. This Pendoflex 4′6″ is inspired by the first fishes we rode standing up which were 4′6″ kneeboards at the time, and the template has inspirations from our long-time friend Stevie Lis and also early paipos we rode. After shaping the board, Steve carved out the front of the board, much like a Greenough shell and glassed it up. Then, he applied the rubber ducky decky. The board originally had 2-inch deep half moon fins, and after we rode it, we added glass to make the fins about 4-1/4-inches deep. This made a huge difference. We can surf, oh, boy! The 3/4-inch nose to tail channels help the wide little board with small fins grab with control when doing 360s, etc.

Steve dropped the little 4’6″ off with Richard Kenvin, and he shared it with Lucas and Tyler. The kids had fun riding this little 4’6″ and nick-named it the Rubber Ducky.
