From the instantaneous availability of information about surfing areas around the world to the increase in surfing populations and pollution awareness, modern surfing is becoming more data-dependent all the time. Behind this sea-change in surfing is the world of oceanography, with a history that stretches from the observations of the ancient Greeks to today’s complex mathematical models and data gathering networks. SASIC XI will explore this connection between modern oceanography and the future of surfing. Speakers include the father of surf reports, Dr. Walter Munk, the forecasting team at Surfline, and Dr. Falk Feddersen, research scientist at Scripps.
On Sunday morning, we’ve organized the 10th Alternative and Sustainable Surf Session and Paipo StokeFest with paipos, alaias, knee-boards, hand-planes, surf mats and a variety of creative surfboards from the surf-stoked fringes of the surfing community. Bring your wetsuit and swim fins, and come enjoy the fun! We’ll be posting up just north side of Scripps pier.
Friends and makers attending include the Paipo Society, John and Rosa with Wegener Surfboards, Ed Lewis and Kip Denslow with Enjoy Handplanes, Tim Hurley with Acorn Alaias, Micah with Micah Wood Surfboards, Pierce and Petra Kavanagh with Misfit Pictures, Glenn Sakamoto with Liquid Salt magazine, Steve and Cher Pendarvis with Pendoflex, and more. . .
