We enjoyed seeing the posts of the fish gatherings in Oceanside recently and in Europe and Huntington this week. Stoked. Wish we could be with you all. Here’s a salute to the fish, a photo of some of our favorite rides of 2008-2009. The four on right are Steve’s faves, the four on the left are Cher’s. Sharp-dressed man rides Moonshine
Our sharp-dressed friend Scott stopped by after work to pick up his custom EPS Pendoflex moontail quad. He christened his new ride, surfing under the light of the full moon, hence its name Moonshine. M’tussie captured the photo of Scotty surfing at the reef. Thanks, Scott and Mike!

Sleek little 5’8″ arch tail single fin
Here’s Steve with a fun little 5’8″ single fin arch tail Pendoflex. This design of this board is inspired by boards we rode in the late 1960s and early 1970’s. Steve modified a template from one of our old boards and shaped this one using a contemporary thickness foil, rocker and rails.

Catch a Wave for Peace
September 21 is International Peace Day, and a time to reflect on all of the blessings we have. This is an annual day dedicated to peace, or the absence of war, such as might be demonstrated by a temporary ceasefire during combat. It’s observed by many nations, political and military groups, and people around the world. To begin the day, the “Peace Bell” is rung at UN Headquarters. The Peace bell is cast from coins donated by children from all around the world. It was given as a gift to the UN by Japan, and is referred to as “a reminder of the human cost of war.” The Peace bell is inscribed with the words: “Long live absolute world peace.”
It’s a privilege to surf, and every wave that we ride is a gift. If you agree, ride a wave for peace, and if you’re not near the coast, do something meaningful that you enjoy to celebrate peace. September 21 also marks Equinox, in our continent Fall, when we look forward to cooler temperatures and more westerly swells.
Thank you to our friend Peggy, for reminding us of this favorite song by John Lennon, Imagine. We hope for peace every day in the entire world for all living things. Enjoy!

23 Amazing Shapers and Surfboards
Here are photos of the exquisite boards and the shaper displays at the Billabong Art of Shaping, San Diego Edition and a few of the people. Royce Cansler, Bird Huffman, and the folks at Billabong did an amazing job organizing this charity benefit. I was honored to donate time to shoot the portraits of all of the shapers for the event displays and web site, many are old friends, a wonderful blessing. The hubba was great at this event. More than fifty years of San Diego shaping was represented. The craftsmen cheered one another on, applause was ongoing, and the Aloha was amazing. More than $46,500 was raised for charity.

On Thursday and Friday, the Art of Shaping can be viewed on the show floor of ASR. At 2 PM on Friday the boards will be moved upstairs to the conference room for the reception and charity auction. The reception begins at 4 PM. We are grateful to Royce, Bird and the Billabong folks for doing such a wonderful job showcasing the San Diego shapers and craftsmen. More photos will be added of the display featuring all of the boards, soon. Here’s Steve with the beautiful Pendoflex Winter Fish that he built for the Art of Shaping, San Diego Edition. Winter Fish is 7’2″, 21″ wide, with high aspect wood twin fins that have Steve’s special hollow foils. The color was done by Steve, and the pen-and-ink scene was drawn on the sanded hot coat by Cher.

Step OFF! for Chapman
Family charger Chapman Murphey is stoked. . . he’s been scoring big barrels in Mainland Mex this summer, and he asked Steve to build him this rad, racey Pendoflex Step OFF. Steve used a heavy blank and glassed it with 7 layers of cloth, and Step OFF weighs in at about 13 pounds. Chapman is 6’6″, and “Chap Step” is 6’5.5″ x 18-3/8″ with a rounded diamond tail and quad fin set up, with special stiff flex. Charge’em Chappy!
